About this dataset
This is a comprehensive repository containing the names of all MPs who have served in the Kenyan parliament from 1988 to 2022. It provides a crucial piece of history that allows members of the public to quickly and easily search and find MPs of specific constituencies at a specific time.
The dataset also provides other important details, including the name of the province and county where the constituency is located.
Additionally, since constituency boundaries have changed over the years, with some constituencies introduced later, abolished, or merged, this dataset provides information on the previous constituency name, making it easier to track the changes over time. For example, in Tharaka Nithi County, the current constituency called Chuka/Igambang'Ombe was previously called Nithi.
Another example in Embu County is Mbeere South, which was previously called Gachoka. In Eastern, the current Mwingi South was Mwingi Central.

This data can be used for a wide range of purposes. The historian may be interested in who was the MP of what constituency in 1988, and the investigative researcher may be interested in how Kenyan politics has transformed.
At Stats Kenya, we used this data to develop our re-election index, whereby we investigated how often MPs in each county get re-elected. We found regional variations, confirming that leaders in some regions get re-elected at higher rates than others.

Methodology
This dataset was compiled from a wide range of sources, including news sources, election results circulars, and the official Kenya parliament website. An attempt was made to ensure the data is as accurate as possible, investigating names and MP histories to ascertain the authenticity of the data.
In some instances, an MP could share a name with a previous one; in others, an MP could use a nickname, rather than their real name. Making sure that these nuances were captured was essential in verifying that the data was indeed accurate. The data aggregation process was also complicated by kinship ties among Members of Parliament in some regions, and these too had to be investigated thoroughly.
Additionally, the fact that some constituency names changed over time meant that we had to capture the names of the MP before the constituency changed its name, and also after.
However, there is still the remote possibility that some errors went unnoticed, and we are working to ensure we catch those. However, it remains the responsibility of the user to ascertain that the details are correct before use.
